About the Exhibit:
For many of us, sharing food and conversation is at the heart of family and community. “Old Dishes, New Dreams” is a digital exhibit created with home chefs from seven different language communities in and around Chapel Hill. Each chef shares a special dish from their home culture while also sharing stories of food, family, and home.
In recent years Chapel Hill has had an increasing number of new residents born outside of the United States. From 2000 to 2018 the percentage of Chapel Hill residents born outside of the U.S. rose from 11.2% to 16.5%, an increase of over 40%. Since 2005 many of those new residents are refugees who now call Orange County home, primarily from Burma/Myanmar, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Project participants also included families from Mexico, Syria, El Salvador, and Colombia.
Food is culture. How a chef prepares a dish—from choosing ingredients to cooking techniques to how the dish is shared among friends and family—is often passed down from one generation to the next. The families who shared their cooking with us also shared their memories about who taught them to cook and what they hope to teach their own children.
The home chefs at the heart of this project have left their home countries and first languages. They carry with them cultural memories, practices, and gifts that make Chapel Hill a more diverse and more delicious community.
Collaboration
“Old Dishes, New Dreams” is a collaboration between Chapel Hill Public Library and Refugee Community Partnership (RCP). Project staff recorded audio and video interviews and cooking demonstrations with 14 project participants.
RCP project coordinator, Paw Paw Wei, recruited participants from different language communities in and around Chapel Hill.
Project work was conducted in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone working on the project had to be creative—from where and how to cook the food that is at the heart of the project work (all outdoors!) to how best to record these stories while keeping both staff and participants safe.
Refugee Community Partnership
RCP reshapes the social and economic landscape that otherwise forces refugee and immigrant communities into the margins of society. Through long term relationship-based support, opportunity development, and cultural stewardship, we build vibrant ecosystems of opportunities, resources, and relationships, activating social mobility while constructing a rich fabric of interdependence and solidarity.

Pour nombreux d’entre nous partager un plats et avoir une conversation est le coeur de la famille et la
communauté. “Vieux plats, de Nouveaux Rêves” est une exposition numérique créée avec des chefs à domicile de sept communautés linguistiques différentes dans et autour de Chapel Hill. Chaque chef partage un plat spécial de sa culture d’origine tout en partageant des histoires de nourriture, de famille et de maison.
Ces dernières années, Chapel Hill a eu un nombre croissant de nouveaux résidents nés en dehors des États-Unis. De 2000 à 2018, le pourcentage de résidents de Chapel Hill nés en dehors des États-Unis est passé de 11,2 % à 16,5 %, soit une augmentation de plus de 40 %. Depuis 2005, beaucoup de ces nouveaux résidents sont des réfugiés qui vivent désormais dans le comté d’Orange, principalement en provenance de Birmanie/du Myanmar, du Cameroun et de la République démocratique du Congo.

Les chefs à domicile au cœur de ce projet ont quitté leur pays d’origine et leur langue maternelle. Ils portent en eux des souvenirs culturels, des pratiques et des cadeaux qui font de Chapel Hill une communauté plus diversifiée et plus délicieuse.
Collaboration
“Vieux plats, de nouveaux rêves” est une collaboration entre la bibliothèque publique de Chapel Hill et le partenariat communautaire de réfugiés (PCR). Le personnel du projet a enregistré des entretiens audio et vidéo et des démonstrations culinaires avec 14 participants au projet. Le coordinateur du projet PCR, Paw Paw Wei, a recruté des participants de différentes communautés linguistiques dans et autour de Chapel Hill.
Les travaux du projet ont été menés à l’automne 2020 et au printemps 2021 pendant la pandémie de COVID-19. Grâce à un soutien relationnel à long terme, au développement d’opportunités et à l’intendance culturelle, nous construisons des écosystèmes dynamiques d’opportunités, de ressources et de relations, activant la mobilité sociale tout en construisant un riche tissu d’interdépendance et de solidarité.

Para muchos de nosotros, comer y conversar significa estar en familia o pertenecer comunidad. “Comidas Tradicionales, Nuevos Sueños” es una exhibición digital que muestra cocineros de siete comunidades lingüísticas diferentes de Chapel Hill y sus alrededores. Cada uno de ellos comparte un platillo especial de su cultura mientras evoca historias de comida, de su familia y su casa.
En los últimos años, Chapel Hill ha tenido un número creciente de nuevos habitantes nacidos fuera de los Estados Unidos. Del 2000 a 2018, el porcentaje de residentes de Chapel Hill nacidos fuera de los Estados Unidos aumentó del 11.2% al 16.5%; un aumento de más del 40%. Las familias que compartieron su cocina con nosotros también compartieron sus memorias sobre quién les enseñó a cocinar y que esperan enseñarle a sus hijos en un futuro.
Los chefs caseros de este proyecto han abandonado sus países de origen y su primer idioma. Ellos cargan con su cultura, memorias, prácticas y regalos que hacen de Chapel Hill un lugar más delicioso, y una comunidad más diversa.

RCP inabadilisha mazingira ya kijamii na kiuchumi ambayo vinginevyo inalazimisha jamii za wakimbizi na wahamiaji pembezoni mwa jamii.Kupitia msaada wa msingi wa uhusiano wa muda mrefu, ukuzaji wa fursa , na usimamizi wa kitamaduni, tunaunda mifumo hai ya fursa , rasilimali na mahusiano, kuamsha uendelevu wa kijamii wakati wa kujenga msingi dhabiti wa kutegemeana na mshikamano.
